Mining started back in April 2006 and to date around 2000 people work on-site – a mixture of local employees and expatriates from various continents.
The plant at Guelb Moghrein currently produces around 3,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per month but with the new SAG mill running properly we should come close to 3,300 tonnes. The new mill is designed to process up to 500 tonnes per hour, but we can even produce up to more than 550 tonnes per hour.
The brand new magnetite plant, which got up and running in November 2014, produces a new high-quality, low-cost iron concentrate. The scheduled production is 800,000 tonnes of concentrate per year. It includes 4 stages separation, new thickening and filtration facilities, and 300 m3 of flotation capacity to improve product specifications.
The nearest town is Akjoujt, a small town with residents who are supportive of the mine and what it can contribute both socially and economically. Through our CSR Department, we maintain close relationships with our local communities providing support for the essential sectors, such as:
Provide portable water to Akjoujt and Bennechab populations and to the communities along the pipeline.
Construct and maintain Akjoujt-Nouakchott road (256 km).
Rehabilitate Akjoujt Hospital and equip it with Hi-tech equipment, this costs more than USD 2 million.
Supporting education by training teachers and renovating schools.
